Colombian Cartel Puts Bounty On Drug Sniffing Dog
Airports are usually gateways for people to get around the globe and see new places, visit family and friends, and go on adventures across the wide world. Of course, there are groups of people who seek to use airports as launch pads for less than savory practices.
Where one-third of business flights come into secondary airports and 19% of flights come into bigger commercial airports, drug cartels are working any angle they can get to transport their contraband across the world. Tight security makes a valiant effort to keep drug trafficking at bay, but some still slip through.
There’s one security officer who’s making waves in the drug smuggling and airport security world and she’s a six-year-old German Shepherd. Sombra — which translates to Shadow — has been sniffing out illegal cocaine shipments with such success that she’s impacting cartel income.
Colombian National Police reported that she’s been so good at her job over the last few years that cartel Urabenos has put a price on her head between 20 and 200 million Colombian pesos, which comes to between $7,000 and $70,000.
Sombra has used her nose to contribute to more than 200 arrests and the seizure of over nine tons of drugs. Gathering the attention of the cartel’s leader, Dairo Antonio Usaga — one of Colombia’s most wanted criminals — Colombian police are taking extra precautions to protect her.
The first step was moving her from the country’s main airport to another less centralized hub. Still, they’ve assigned her a handler and a group of armed guards who also stick by her side.
“The fact they want to hurt Sombra and offer such a high reward for her capture or death shows the impact she’s had on their profits,” reported Colombian police.
While Colombia remains one of the world’s foremost cocaine distributors, small dents are being made in their illicit business. Small dents that are large enough to warrant attention both positive and negative. Hats off and paws up for Sombra being a furry force for good in the battle against illegal drugs.
Who’s the goodest girl? Sombra’s the goodest girl.
