Want Your Favorite Player on Your Head? San Antonio Barber Can Help!
Is wearing a sports jersey and painting your face just not enough for you? Maybe you should have a portrait of your favorite player on your head. If you’re ready to bring your fan pride to the next level, San Antonio-based barber and hairstylist named Rob Ferrel, AKA Rob the Original, will be more than happy to oblige you.
Ferrel grew up in a big family, cutting his brother’s hair and his own from a young age. He was also a dedicated artist, and when he decided to draw a portrait of rapper Tupac Shakur on his brother’s head, he found a way to combine his passions.
Ferrel works from a picture on his phone, using a straight razor and trimmer to create the base for the drawing. Once he’s got that in place, he uses non-toxic lip liner and eye liner pencils to create the vivid colors of the portraits and uses hair spray to protect the design. His portraits usually take about two hours, and Ferrel often listens to music while he works.
In the eight years since he opened his shop in San Antonio, Ferrel’s been fielding more and more requests from people who want portraits of musicians and San Antonio Spurs players on their heads. However, once the world cup hit, a flood of patrons were asking for players like Javier “Chicharito” Hernández and Tim Howard, especially while Mexico was still in the running.
While hair portraits can look stunning, they do cut pretty close to the scalp, so it’s a good idea to deal with any scalp issues if you’re considering such a dramatic cut. Eating right, staying hydrated, exercising, de-stressing and getting the right amount of sleep can greatly increase scalp health, as can the many moisturizing conditioners on the market.
According to Ferrel, hair portraiture is a growing trend that he intends to capitalize on if he can. His work has been featured on many major news outlets and he’s considering starting another shop or a franchise. He’d also like to open a barber college.
