Students from a Texas High School stepped up back in September to help those who were directly affected by Hurricane Harvey. The students held canned-food drives and supply drives to help people who were lacking necessary items. However, many students from the high school decided that the drives weren’t enough. They wanted to do more.

Students from Dallas area’s Wylie High School rented out three charter buses and drove over 400 miles to cheer on Rockport-Fulton’s football team, the Pirates, during a game. The Wylie High School students took the trip up to support both the team and the community, as it was among the hardest hit by the Category-4 hurricane. In 2012, students and seniors accounted for 50.2% of the trips provided by charter buses. But if more school trips like this happen, it’s safe to say those numbers will rise even higher.

Dallasnews.com spoke with Wylie’s principal Virdie Montgomery before the groups of students and supporters headed to the game.

“My kids just kept coming in and asking ‘What else can we do? Their place was just flat destroyed. We found out they weren’t even asking you to send supplies anymore. FEMA was going to take care of that. They just needed money and gift cards and things like that,” Montgomery said to the news organization. “Their deputy superintendent wrote me an email after she found out about it. She said we can’t believe how this is going to help. The kids down there need emotional support.”

Sponsors and about 150 students took the charter buses to Coastal Bend to watch Rockport-Fulton’s game against Ingleside High School. Additional students drove to the game with their parents to show their support. During the game, Wylie High School presented a check of $5,000 to the Rockport- Fulton Pirates. This money was raised through Wylie t-shirt sales. Along with the monetary donation, over 2,000 notes of hope and encouragement were presented to the high school hit by hurricane devastation.

The Rockport-Fulton Pirates won the game against Ingleside High School with a score of 29-0.
