Leadership Signpost Showing Vision Values Empowerment and Encouragement

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, the first marriages of 47% of “Black non-Hispanic” people end in divorce, and actress Eva Mendes claims to know why.

In a recent interview with Extra, the star confessed that she doesn’t really wear comfy clothes around the house. Even though she’s constantly tending to her and Ryan Gosling’s new child, Mendes said she can’t dress down, because wearing sweats is a big no-no for any couple.

“No, no, no, no! You can’t do sweatpants. No. Ladies, number one cause of divorce in America? Sweatpants. No. Can’t do that,” she said.

Though it’s unclear as to whether or not Mendes was only joking around, the fact of the matter is that the top reason people get divorced in the U.S. is because of a lack of trust. Loss of intimacy, and basic incompatibility are two other reasons why marriages dissolve.

The economic repercussions of divorce are nothing to joke about. The Heritage Foundation reports that state governments spend about $150 million each year subsidizing and sustaining single-parent families, but only $150 million strengthening marriages. For every $1,000 spent dealing with the effects of divorce, only $1 is spent trying to keep families together.

However, sometimes divorce is just for the best. According to Dr. Gail Gross, a human behavior, parenting, and education expert, divorce can lead to self-reflection, improved health, self-confidence, empowerment, and healthier relationships.

It’s also important to note that if anyone does ever find themselves in the unfortunate position of needing a divorce, it’s paramount that they hire an experienced attorney, who can negotiate such complicated issues as property division, spousal support and child custody.

Let’s just hope their services aren’t needed because of sweatpants.
